When Jerry Donahue, the famous “string bender” of the group “Hellcasters,” wanted a custom Telecaster that could give him the best of both worlds for touring and to meet his demanding playing style, he turned to Fender’s Custom Shop. Together, they designed a Telecaster that had a vintage ‘62 double bound Telecaster Custom body with a true ‘52 Tele V shaped neck and ‘52 custom bridge and pickup. Then they added touch of a vintage Stratocaster sound in the neck with a vintage 50’s Strat pickup. There was also added the famous the out-of-phase Strat sound by using some trick custom wiring. Kind of a Strat-o-tele! As a result of this, Fender’s Custom Shop started manufacturing the Jerry Donahue Custom Shop Tele (some going at a pricy $3800!). Later, Fender’s MIJ factory came out with a Jerry Donahue Signature Model. Some of these varied, as did the rival US Custom Shop models. THE GUITAR: It is a 1996 Fender CIJ Jerry Donahue Signature Model Telecaster in TRANSPARENT BLUE with "ivory white" double binding. (Serial #A010277). You do not see these on eBay very often. THE BODY: As stated already, the JD Telecasters come with a 1962 Custom style body. This one is a Transparent Blue, with ivory white double binding. The pickguard is a 3-ply Black-White-Black, which has very light pick marks on the guard.This has the Traditional 1952 style bridge with 3-Brass saddles with strings through body design. A unique blend of 52-62 Telecaster with a nice Strat touch in the wiring! THE CONDITION: The finish is almost mint with the exception of 3 hairline finish cracks on the back that run the length of the body. These finish cracks are common and are hard to see and they do not really even show very well in the photos. BTW, the top is perfect. Anything else you see in the pictures are reflections on this high gloss body. I am honest and a fanatic about the condition of the guitars. This guitar weights 7 lbs 0 ozs. THE NECK: The neck is a skunk-striped solid Maple with a slight vintage tint. The neck is near mint. It has that true 1952 chunky V shape. The tuners Vintage Fender slotted Kluson tuners. Th e medium frets are like brand new! The whole neck is excellent shape. The action low and was just completely set-up. It tunes and plays fantastic. THE ELECTRONICS: The JD Teles come custom wired from the factory with a 1950s type Strat pickup in the neck and a 1952 Tele pickup in the bridge wired with some custom 5-way switching. Here is how the switch works: Position 1) The bridge pickup give that vintage Tele bite. Position 2) The bridge pickup and the neck pickup out-of-phase.
